Around 300 people attended Sunday’s rally at Hyde Park, Gadigal Land, marking the 10th anniversary of the death of Dunghutti man, David Dungay Jnr, who was killed at Long Bay Gaol in 2015 when six prison officers sedated him and pinned him down after he refused to stop eating a packet of biscuits. His last words were “I can’t breathe”.
Dungay’s nephew, Paul Silva led the rally, demanding a new independent investigation into his uncle’s death.
Other speakers included Rick Hampson, father of Dougie Hampson who was also killed in custody, Paddy Gibson, researcher at UTS and NSW Greens MP, Sue Higginson. All speakers spoke out against the new anti-protest laws in NSW, which civil liberties groups say restrict political expression.
Protesters were blocked from marching to the Domain by a huge police presence as part of the new anti-protest regime.
