Madeline McGrady

Portraits of Gomeroi filmmaker, activist and writer, Madeline McGrady, at her home near Wyong.

Born and raised on the Aboriginal mission of Toomelah in northern NSW, Madeline McGrady rose out of poverty and deeply entrenched racism to become one of a new wave of trailblazing Aboriginal filmmakers during the early 1980s, with ground breaking films including ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ about land rights, ‘Welcome to Wee Waa’ about Black Deaths in Custody and ‘Guniwaya Ngigu’ (We Fight) a documentary on the campaign against the 1982 Commonwealth Games. She was the first Aboriginal person to sit on the board at The Australian Film Commission.

Now based on Darkinjung country, Madeline McGrady continues to advocate for social and economic justice for her people and community.
