Portraits of life-long 80-year old activist, artist and performer, Benny Zable, in his famous ‘Greedozer’ costume, shot on location at the Rising Tide protest in Newcastle on Worimi and Awakabal Lands in November.
Zable’s ‘Greedozer’ has made appearances at many of the major environmental, political and anti-war protest campaigns in Australia and overseas for decades, from the Franklin Dam protests in the 1980s, to blockades against the Jabiluka uranium mines in the Northern Territory, at Occupy Wall Street camps in New York and, more recently, at pro-Palestine rallies around the country.
Benny Zable is currently one of the lead applicants, along with First Nations activist, Tarneen Onus Browne, challenging the Victorian Government’s ‘pat-down’ laws, which give police expanded powers to stop and search anyone in Melbourne’s CBD.
Versions of Zable’s ‘Greedozer’ costume are held by various museums, including by the National Museum of Australia.
