Waitangi Day - Toitū te Tiriti

Photographs from Saturday’s commemoration of Waitangi Day in Emerson in Western Sydney, Darug Land.

The community event pressed for Toitū Te Tiriti - or the honouring of the Waitangi Treaty, the foundational document which has determined relations between Māori and Pākehā (Europeans) since the British colonisation of Aotearoa (New Zealand). The Treaty is currently under threat by the current right-wing New Zealand government which intends to pass The Treaty Principles Bill. Many Māori see this piece of legislation as not only an attempt to undermine long-established Māori rights but as racist. Toitū Te Tiriti has spread as a protest movement across Aotearoa, ‘Australia’ and internationally.

Saturday’s event in Emerton consisted of a smoking by local Darug representatives, Uncle Lex Dadd and Auntie Corina Norman, followed by speeches, a hīkoi (march) through the local neighbourhood, cultural activities and lunch.

Rally Against Femicide

Today, a small but passionate group demonstrated against femicide in Australia. The rally took place outside Sydney Town Hall, Gadigal Land.

More women were murdered last year in Australia since records began, with 78 women killed in gender-based violence im 2024. This number is only two fewer than the amount of women murdered in the United Kingdom in the same period, a country with a population almost three times as great as Australia.

Australian Femicide Watch claim these figures are under-quoted, and the true number of women killed in gender-based violence in Australia is actually 101.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are disproportionately represented in these numbers.

Rally Against Islamophobic Attack

Photographs from this morning’s rally at Bankstown police Station, in south west Sydney, Darug Land.

Last week, Mariam, a Palestinian woman, and her young daughter were verbally attacked and threatened with physical harm in an Islamophobic attack at KMart in Bankstown shopping centre. The attack was recorded on social media. Mariam has claimed that she called police, who failed to respond, and instead started harassing her family and acquaintances.

This morning’s rally was held to support Mariam and demand that police take immediate and appropriate action. Speakers brought attention to the differences of how authorities and main stream media respond to Islamophobic incidents in comparison to anti-Semetic and anti-Zionist incidents.

After the rally, Mariam went into the police station to lodge an official complaint.
